OUR PEOPLE
Although we had never met each other before we all knew we had one thing in common. We all cared for someone who had sustained a brain injury. As we shared our stories and feelings this small group, who had been invited by Social Services Head Injury Team met with them once a week for six weeks. we began to empathize with one another and value each other's understanding, acceptance and friendship. The allotted six weeks came to an end but we wanted to carry on meeting and get in touch with others in similar situations so we contacted Headway UK, with support from Ann Hurley, their Area Co-ordinator, we began working towards forming a Bradford branch.
After meeting monthly for about a year and gaining some more members, we were delighted when it became clear there was enough who were willing and able to form a committee, the rest being very supportive. The official papers were signed in December 2006 and we became Headway Bradford. Our aim is to offer support and friendship to others in our area whose lives have been affected by brain injury. For this purpose we offer a listening ear to anyone who wishes to contact us and also have monthly support meetings and social activities planned.
Although it is sad that our sort of group is needed, we hope people who find themselves in the position of having to live brain injury will find or group helpful in one way or another.
